I often wonder why I think so poorly of German actors. A lot of the German people that I see on TV or in movies seem bad actors to me, especially when I compare them to the American actors I adore. I believe that acting in America is way more professional and actors such as Al Pacino or even Hilary Swank are in my opinion way more charismatic than any other German actor I cant think of. I wonder whether this has got something to do with the fact that I am German, too and that, for this reason, the German culture which German actors embrace and encompass, is less mythical to me and therefore less interesting. But if I see, for instance, Iris Berben on TV, I just think: Oh, that's Iris Berben, I thought she was just doing commercials for shampoo, but look, she's actually an actress. But when I look at the parts she plays, I really can't see her being anything but the lame and jejune herself.
Speaking of this TV movie: It was once again desperately trying to americanize German TV and for this reason alone it should be dismissed as junk. Is the German culture so poor that it doesn't know what else to do but copy American culture and implementing it in German TV? And haven't we all found out by now that Fincher's incredible 7even can't be topped no matter how hard a director tries. Even the plot of this film - the serial killer is actually the brother, oh my good, what an unexpected twist in the plot (irony) - is so stereotypical of this genre that I consider this film a complete waste of money. I don't understand why the German media industry invests so much money in these well made but unimaginative films instead of subsidizing innovative and young filmmakers such as Sebastian Schipper.
