Will Smith Is Gold At Box Office

8 July 2008 10:35 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Will Smith displayed his superpowers at the box office over the weekend as his poorly reviewed Hancock opened in first place with $62.6 million, making it Smith's 12th No. 1 opener. Still, Hancock was no Transformers, last year's Fourth-of-July blockbuster, and the overall box office for the year retreated behind 2007's by 0.65 percent to $4.81 billion (versus $4.84 billion), according to Media by Numbers. More significantly, the attendance gap between last year and this widened slightly to 3.46 percent. Overall, the box office recorded $153.19 million in total ticket sales, compared with $165.45 million a year ago, a 7.41-percent decline. Last weekend's top film, Wall-E dropped 48 percent to $32.5 million, while the Angelina Jolie thriller Wanted slipped to third place with $20.1 million, a 61-percent plunge.

The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Media by Numbers (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date):1. Hancock, Sony, $62,603,879, 1 Wks. ($103,877,446 -- from Tuesday); 2. Wall-E, Disney, $32,509,206, 2 Wks. ($127,196,028); 3. Wanted, Universal, $20,050,070, 2 Wks. ($90,186,395); 4. Get Smart, Warner Bros., $11,109,408, 3 Wks. ($98,100,652); 5. Kung Fu Panda, Paramount, $7,318,635, 5 Wks. ($193,221,867); 6 . The Incredible Hulk, Universal, $4,899,280, 4 Wks. ($124,841,395); 7. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Paramount, $3,774,807, 7 Wks. ($306,428,521); 8. Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, Picturehouse, $3,296,929, 3 Wks. ($5,822,544); 9. Hancock Take Super -- But It's No Transformers

4 July 2008 10:35 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

On Wednesday, its first full day of release, Sony's Hancock took in $17.3 million and appeared to be in position to top $100 million by the end of the Independence Day weekend according to box-office trackers Media by Numbers. Combined with Tuesday-night preview screenings, the film has now taken in $24.1 million. While such results would normally be the kind studio executives dream about, they pale in comparison with those of last year's Transformers, which took in $27.8 million in its first full-day of release.

‘Hancock’ pulls in $17.3 million on opening day

3 July 2008 10:56 PM, PDT | From screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news

Is Will Smith still a box office hero? We probably won’t know the answer to that until Sunday afternoon when we’ll get the five-day box office estimates, but for now, it’s looking like the actor’s latest flick “Hancock” is on the right track to score big bucks.

According to Variety, Peter Berg’s “Hancock” pulled in $17.3 million Wednesday. If you add the $6.8 million from Tuesday night’s preview screenings, the film reaches a current domestic total of $24.1 million.

Looking back at last year’s July 4 weekend, Michael Bay’s action hit “Transformers” took home $27.8 on opening day to bring its weekend total to an impressive $155.4 million. At this stage, it doesn’t look like “Hancock” is going to match that result.

The only other film to open nationwide this holiday weekend is “Kit Kittredge: An American Girl,” but I’m sure that’s not going to

Keeping an Eye on 'Eagle Eye'

27 June 2008 5:31 PM, PDT | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

Have you seen the new trailer for Eagle Eye yet? If not, we've got it for you. It came out a couple of days ago and I've been trying to place the woman's voice on the phone ever since. About the only thing I can come up with is that the Gps lady is off her meds...and she's got it out for Shia Labeouf and Michelle Monaghan.

Shia is Steven Spielberg's new charge, appearing in four straight Spielberg movies (he's credited as a producer for this and both Transformers flicks, plus he directed Indy IV), not that he doesn't deserve the push. I'll be really interested to see if he makes it through this first rush of fame, because audiences do have a talent for turning on flavors of the month, especially when they're in two big movies a year. I happen to think he's really talented, so

Transformers Sequel To Focus More On Character

25 June 2008 3:59 AM, PDT | From syfyportal.com | See recent syfyportal news

It won't just be all action and testosterone for the upcoming "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" as rewrites have been ordered to help strengthen some character scenes with star Shia Labeouf. That was among a number of tidbits about the Transformers sequel shared this week by Dark Horizons, a lot of it coming from Labeouf's costar in the movie, Megan Fox, who promises that the new film will be "10 times as big" as the first one. Some scenes will apparently take place in Paris, or in actuality parts of Philadelphia that could be substituted for Paris, that involves the parents of Labeouf's character played by Julie White and Kevin Dunn. It's been reported that the two are being chased by a silver Saturn Astra through the city. And finally, Paramount Pictures has made it clear that ...

19 June 2008 10:15 PM, PDT | From PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news

Amid the bigger, better and louder explosions that will be detonated in her upcoming movie sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Megan Fox isn't sure audiences will care about any of the quiet moments – like when she and Shia Labeouf get to lock lips. "As big as the first movie was, this is 10 times as big, 10 times as many set pieces, explosions and acrobatic stunts," Fox, 21, tells MTV. "Shia and I make out a little bit; I don't know if anyone wants to see that." Labeouf Feared Transformers Axe

23 May 2008 5:06 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Shia Labeouf was convinced moviemaker Steven Spielberg was going to axe him from Transformers during a meeting - but was offered a part in Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull instead.

Labeouf feared his Hollywood career was over after he was called into a meeting with the legendary filmmaker ahead of the release of the 2007 Transformers movie.

But he was pleasantly surprised by Spielberg's offer.

He tells Hollyscoop.com, "I had just finished making Transformers. On a Monday, I got a call: 'Steven wants to meet with you at his office on Thursday regarding a movie he's gonna be making.'

"So I went to Amblin, and I came into his office. I had started to think maybe I was going to the principal's office.

"Like that Steven was going to say, 'Listen, we just saw all the Transformers footage, and we're in the midst of cutting you out of the film. And we just wanted to express our thanks for your hard work and efforts.'"

But what Spielberg really wanted was to ask him to star in the next installment of the Indiana Jones franchise.

Labeouf said he felt like he was going to cry and started pacing around the office, and Steven said, "I guess that means yes."
