Better than you think it will be..., 31 March 2003

Okay, this is a pauly shore movie, and it is actually good. It is a mockumentary about Pauly faking his death and getting caught and how his life/career go into a downward spin as a result.

SPOILERS BELOW, JUST TO WARN YOU

Anyway, what struck me about this is how it seemed that he has a sense of humor about his "weasel" days. The guy openly makes fun of himself and his movies. Maybe this is just a shallow attempt to re-invent himself, but more likely, i think he has a sense of humor and it's a mea culpa.

Funny bits involve running clips from Kurt Loder, E! TV as well as a subplot about an obsessed fan, it's all woven together pretty well.

Lots of cameos, I mean lots! Tommy Lee, Heidi Fleiss, Bill Maher, Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Vince vaughn, and Vern Troyer (mini me) just to name a few. In fact at times, all the celebs kind of took me out of the story, but in the end, it is pretty funny and well done.

Pauly openly mocks his Fox TV Show and ends up m,ore or less being saved by Todd Bridges, who is pretty funny as himself. Anyway, I don't know if a distributor will pick this movie up, but it should no doubt be on HBO or Showtime, where i think it would be very well-received. If you get a chance, check it out, even if you hated Pauly shore, yo might actually get a kick out of it.

An inspirational story, 5 February 2005
10/10

Pauly Shore is Dead is inspirational not because of the story it tells, but because of the story of the film and it's creator. I only bought the DVD on the most extreme suggestions of people I respected, due to my hatred of the man's previous performances. All I can say is that I was stunned.

Somebody that I viewed as talentless turned out a performance that is nothing short of classic. It's probably been 3 years or more since I laughed so much at a single movie. Everyone, from Pauly to every single cameo, makes fun of themselves. That is what makes this movie great. Whenever you see a celebrity, you know they are going to make fun of themselves and not try to put themselves over. That kind of selfless comedy is what makes this film great.

I guess sometimes people who get famous for shtick really are talented beyond what we have seen. This movie proves, to me, that in at least one case that is true.

Just Hilarious, 11 September 2005

This flick was one of the funniest things I've seen since Super Troopers. The story is so stupid it's funny. The idea that most people aren't really appreciated until they are dead is what the film is about. He fakes his death and everyone starts saying they miss him and his wit and humor. Don't let other people's reviews fool you. This is one film worth seeing. It is shot very poorly considering Pauly had to fund the whole thing himself, but it doesn't make for a difference. If your heart is in comedy and you remember the great movies of BioDome, Encino Man, Son In Law, then you'll love this flick. Some people right bad reviews based on a dislike of "artsy" films or of Pauly Shore. I don't have a dislike or a like of him. I just know this movie is funny and I know funny when I see it. So trust me, if you want to see something funny and a cult classic, such as Super Troopers or Monty Pythons Holy Grail, see this movie. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!

Could have ended it at Jury Duty, 17 September 2005

Pauly Shore is one of the actors you love to hate; so much so that it got to the point where his whole career was based on people's dislike for him. But, Pauly Shore is Dead proves that it's not funny when he's in on the joke.

The film is a self-mockery, where Pauly Shore – played by himself – fakes his own death for credibility. Not a bad concept, but in the end just comes out arrogant and obnoxious. It certainly proves that Pauly Shore shouldn't have any control over direction or screenplays, as the jokes are stale, lame and predictable. The only way it holds itself up is by the various cameos.

Even though this is an obvious self-mockery, Shore seems to take himself very seriously to think people actually want to see him write and direct his own film, as if to say "hey, guys - I'm in on the joke too!" while looking down at his fans who are portrayed as obsessive rednecks.

Even though Pauly Shore clearly can't write, I think I'm one of the few that really enjoyed his early films. But, from early on to now, they're really went downhill: Encino Man: The first film where Shore had leading role. Easily his best film, and shows that it's probably best for him to be a secondary character.

Son in Law: Certainly no Encino Man, but still some funny moments.

In the Army Now: I'd stay away from this if you've seen Stripes and care about originality. Overall, pretty good film, though.

Jury Duty: His last watchable film. It really, really should have stopped there.

If it had stopped there, there would still be a few remaining strands of credibility left, but, unfortunately, he had to pull an arrogant and pretentious stunt by making Pauly Shore is Dead.

You might be surprised..., 9 January 2007

First off, let me say that I was never a fan of Pauly Shore. In fact, I could never understand how it was even possible that someone this unfunny was able to have a career as a comedian, but hey ... Despite my claims of hatred, though, I still managed to watch everything he'd done, in some kind of a masochistic, painful cycle, and my hatred for him continued to grow and grow.

So it was inevitable that I would eventually catch 'Pauly Shore Is Dead', but what was surprising is how truly funny the film turned out to be. It's not perfect, by any stretch, and has a few moments that seem a little forced and even sentimental (such as the guardian angel visits), but all in all, I have to say this is one hell of a funny movie, and whether you like him or not, I think it would be hard not to admit some kind of respect for a man who is so willing to make fun of himself.

It is his sense of humor about himself that ultimately makes the film work, and I must admit that between the self-effacing plot line and the surprising amount of work that went into making the film, Shore has really gone up in my book. I still think he might be in the wrong line of business, but at least he's grounded enough in reality to realize that possibility as well.

Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys watching any celebrity spoof themselves, as the film is loaded with numerous amusing cameos. Also check out the deleted scenes, a highlight being the rendition of the song 'It's Been A While'. Check it out, and you may be as pleasantly surprised as I was.

Good work, Wiez!

This is one of the worst films I have ever seen, 19 September 2006

Do not bother wasting your time or money on this product it really is appalling the plot is cumbersome and confused and the acting is diabolical. Its an attempt to get good actors together with a crap script and try to make it funny well I am sorry but this just isn't possible. The film transcends into ridiculous cameo performances but fails to make them spark the film into life how they managed to get so many comic actors on board with this script is beyond me because quite frankly the film is just not funny. Its a tired story anyway which has been done many times before and surely better though I haven't watched this type of film as I know what it is going to be like boring and unfunny.

Pauly Shore finds a new device to irritate people in this horrific film, 5 March 2008

*** This comment may contain spoilers ***

If you want to watch a movie that includes Pauly Shore quoting his other movies, with a lot of cameos in it, that shows on several occasions Pauly Shore masturbating, then this movie is for you. However, my blood pressure rose several points by the end of the film due to how irritated it made me. It was much like driving through the rain during rush hour while you have a cold. Pauly Shore has found yet another device to irritate people. This movie is lacking in plot, depth, and comedy.

While none of the following "got" me, some people might like this: There were cameos all over the place (how he was able to lure so many people into participating in this disaster is beyond me). Some might find a new respect for Pauly Shore due to his ability to make fun of himself. People who appreciate Pauly Shores humor (if that's what you want to call it), would probably find the movie funny.

When asked by my husband how this compared to other Pauly Shore films, I told him that Pauly shore films can't be rated on the same continuum as other movies because they're all so bad that they fail any sort of logistical form of expression.

Contains spoilers because it must, 18 June 2005

I rented this hoping for either a) a documentary-of-sorts where celebrities were interviewed honestly believing Pauly Shore was dead or b) a well-done mockumentary with the awkward humor of This is Spinal Tap (okay, that's a really tall order, I realize).

I was prepared to be disappointed, but not THIS disappointed. Why in the world was so much screen time devoted to porn stars, references to porn stars, and masturbation? I'm no prude, but so much wasn't relevant, it was annoying.

The movie had the potential to be a This is Spinal Tap-type, but it fell short. I do applaud Pauly Shore for writing and directing and openly mocking his past, but it seems like he shied away from going all-out with it and used a poorly thought out "dumb hick" side plot to... to do what, I don't know, but whatever that was for, it didn't work. Also, it seemed the whole time that he couldn't decide if he was making a comedy or a mockumentary. Some of the movie is shot like a conventional story and some is shot as though there were an inexplicable camera catching people's private reactions to the news... it just didn't work.

I gave two stars instead of one for guts.

Making my attempt to remain objective., 6 June 2005
3/10

You know, I don't even hate Pauly Shore nearly as much as many other people seem to, and it's still hard to remain objective during the course of this movie and actually judge it for what it's worth. Well, let me get to what I thought it was going to be.

My girlfriend and I were cruising the rental place having just returned Team America and Party Monster. I saw it on the shelf and had looked at it before, but never had the guts to rent it. So we did. We returned home, threw it in, and I started it expecting some sort of funny, dark prank where Shore went around getting interviews from famous actors and comedians about their opinions of the 'late' Pauly Shore. That would have been funny. But I can't judge the movie on my own disappointment from that aspect. This is what you actually get.

Pauly. Shore. Writing.

Yeah, that's it, let it sink in. Absorb it. It's just about as painful as it sounds. There are some decent parts, I'll give him credit for what he wrote that actually did turn out funny, but it's funny for all the wrong reasons. Your reactions might sound like, "holy hell, he actually got Tom Siezmore/Micheal Madsen/Ben Stiller/Carrot Top to do this for him?" Those parts are funny enough, but the parts with the maddened redneck and Shore undercover get just plain embarrassing. Too much of the movie is written and the acting contrasts by being half-assed by everybody but Pauly and his mother Mitzi on the phone.

The writing isn't the only bad part, though, the whole thing is done on digital film because (educated guess) it's cheaper. It just looks bad when it's not done right, and he didn't do it right. Most of the movie looks rather like a bunch of giddy little high school girls doing a project for the lit. class. Just bad choices, bad direction, really rough editing, so many things that chop away at the score.

Pauly Shore claims to have worked on this for over four years. The man needs to get a life. Buuuuuuuuuuuddy.
