Used by the BBC as a platform to launch several up coming programs aimed at children, in particular "Doctor Who" (1963).
The title music is called "Barnacle Bill".
The "Blue Peter" referred to in the title is a flag flown by Royal Navy ships to indicate they are about to leave port. It is a blue flag with a white square in the center. The same flag also stands for the letter "P" in the international flag signal alphabet.
Amongst the memorable TV performances was "The Papadum Song" by The R.J. Wagsmith Band (Mo Foster & Mike Walling) which struck a chord with anyone (i.e. everyone) who had ever had a few drinks and gone out for an Indian meal. For a giggle Mo Mike sang the song live on Blue Peter, though Mo had to hand back his Blue Peter badge when he inadvertently sang "fuck" instead of "duck".
The show has buried time-capsules at BBC TV Centre, London (for excavation in 2029) and at the Greenwich Millennium Dome site (to be recovered in 2050).
