Married to actress Franziska Walser, daughter of the famous author Martin Walser. They have a son and a daughter.

After studying philosophy, germanistics and classic piano in Dublin, Munich and Vienna, he attended acting lessons at the Otto-Falckenberg-Schule in Munich.

Made his stage debut as "Ariel" in William Shakespeare's "The Storm" in 1974.

Appeared with his wife Franziska Walser in several movies such as _Im Chaos der Gefühle (2002)_ or an episode of "Polizeiruf 110" (1971).

As he successfully performed at every important theater in the German speaking regions such as the Munich Kammerspiele or the Vienna Burgtheater, he was chosen "Actor of the Year" by "Theater heute" magazine six times (1979, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1994, 1995).
